Week 8 Term 2 2023
From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
As I write this column, I have just returned to my Office from our annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival. Huddled in conversation on the College Ovals early this morning, I encountered Mr Simon Andrews, Mr Brian Battese, and the recently retired Mr Bernie MacDonald: the three gentlemen who have led Woodlawn’s long and proud sporting tradition since 1980! Throughout the day, time and again, I witnessed a tremendous camaraderie, friendly rivalry and spirit of sportsmanship that would be the envy of schools across the country and further afield. While we take a day away from our timetabled classwork, the ‘informal curriculum’ is well and truly at work on such a day. Special thanks to Mr Andrews, staff, Senior Leaders, our Parent volunteers and all students who made our Athletics Carnival such a success. And congratulations to the winning House, Kennedy!
Speaking of School Spirit, I am happy to report that our Year 12 students have been meeting regularly over the past few weeks to ensure that our St John’s Day celebrations on the last day of term (Friday, 30 June) set a new benchmark for Woodlawn. Please encourage your sons and daughters to fully immerse themselves in the many co-curricular opportunities that a Woodlawn education offers. Many of the lessons learned outside the formal classroom environment are equally valuable to producing young women and men of competence, conscience and compassion, with an attitude of excellence and service.
Our next P&F Meeting will be held next Monday evening, 19 June at 5.30pm in the College Library. Please come along and join what is always an informative evening. This month, Mr Mason, Mrs Reen and Mrs Fennamore will provide a brief outline of the College’s 2023 School Annual Improvement Plan.
We wish our Marist Netballers all the very best for their trip to Perth next week to compete in this annual sporting competition. Special thanks to Mrs Fiona Fennamore and Ms Jane Farrugia who will accompany our students.
The traditional cold and flu season is now upon us, so we offer a gentle reminder to families to ensure that students who are displaying signs of illness remain at home until these symptoms have eased. NSW Health offers the following steps to reduce your COVID risk:
- Stay up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations.
- Stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms and get tested.
- Wear a mask in crowded, indoor places.
- Talk with your doctor now if you are at higher risk of severe illness. You may be eligible for antiviral medicines.
- Don't visit people who are at higher risk if you have symptoms or COVID-19.
The College still has a small supply of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) available to students. If you require these, please collect via SSO.
On Thursday night, we conducted the annual ‘SRC Sleepover’ during which a significant amount of time was spent on leadership formation. As this fortnight’s reflection, I include the following points I made to our SRC Leaders in relation to our 2023 Theme: ‘Recreating the Traditions’:
What is the Woodlawn narrative that we wish to recreate?
- We are all part of a story much larger than ourselves;
- The Woodlawn spirit ‘breathes’ through the story of our past which is exemplified in our traditional structures and also into our present and future;
- Each of us has something to contribute to the Woodlawn story;
- Part of 'Tenete Traditiones' calls us to be custodians of the story and to share this with future generations of students/staff/families/community.
On behalf of all members of the Woodlawn family, we extend our condolences to Millie (Year 7), Tom (Year 9) and Megan (Staff) McPhee; and Charlotte Halliday (Year 11) who have all lost loved ones recently. May they rest in peace.
Finally, thanks to those parents who took the time to provide feedback as part of my Principal Appraisal which was conducted earlier this week. I appreciate your affirmation of my work, under trying circumstances, over the past four years and assure you that I will endeavour to faithfully implement the recommendations made during my next period of contract.
With best wishes for this final fortnight of Term.
Sincerely
Aaron Beach

From the Assistant Principal - Mission

I was recently asked the question ‘What are some of the key College values?’ and I thought I would explain them using images.
St John’s College is a Catholic school which believes that God, revealed in Jesus Christ, and alive in the Holy Spirit, guides each student towards a ‘fullness of life’ through our foundational values. All schools across the Lismore Diocese are committed to ensuring that the following values are embedded in all that we do.

Looking Forward
We welcome everyone into our community. Please encourage your students to be involved in all aspects of College life. Together we are shaping their future.
Week 9
- We wish all Year 10s the best as they experience life in the workforce.
- On Tuesday evening we welcome the parents of our Years 7 and 9 students, to discuss our students' progress and set some goals together. We encourage you to attend with your child.
- Six of our Year 11 students will travel to Brisbane with Mrs Colman to experience Street Retreat. This is a Diocesan program where students participate in a range of ministry experiences over four days. These are service based and encourage students to reflect on our Mission to be active in seeking justice for the marginalised.
- Year 7 Reflection Day is an opportunity for all Year 7 students to come together with a ‘can do attitude’ to build community, connections and relationships.
- Year 9 Ministry students will travel to Mullumbimby to assist with a Retreat Day for Years 3 and 4. Peer-to-Peer Ministry is an essential feature of our Ministry program. Year 8s nominate to be part of this class in 2024. Start the conversation early.
- Uncle Gilbert will join us for lunch and an afternoon preparing for NAIDOC celebrations. We look forward to sharing a meal and being immersed in this special experience.
Week 10
- NAIDOC Gathering and flag raising ceremony.
- Awards Assembly: recognising academic and sporting excellence and also commending students for their commitment and participation. Silver and Gold badges will be awarded at this time.
- Parent Information Evening for those attending the Cambodian Immersion.
- Years 7 and 8 will view the Brainstorm productions ‘sticks and stones’ presentation focusing on fostering positive relationships.
- ST JOHN’S DAY - Celebrating our College Patron, St John. Check out the promotion in this Newsletter.
Week 1, Term 3
- Kennedy House Breakfast. The notifications have gone out, please reply for catering purposes. This is a great way to meet staff and families.

We are blessed to be part of a community with so many opportunities.
Please contact me at the College if you have any questions or would like to know how you and your children can be more involved in living 'the Woodlawn Way'.

From the Acting Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching

As we move towards the conclusion of our first academic semester, it is an important time to reflect on the successes that have been experienced in and out of the classroom so far this year. Equally important is processing failure, setting goals and making plans for improvement in Semester 2. Even the best students will have achieved some sense of failure this semester, and it is important that we, the adults in their lives, help them navigate those experiences. This article, I believe, is a nice taste of some of the ideas around how we can help teenagers process their inevitable failures and come out better for the experience.
As we speak, Junior Examinations are being marked, and very soon, all students in Years 7 to 10 will receive their summative grades in this year’s first formal academic report. Those marks should not come as a surprise: they are heralded by the four RFL reports that you have received this semester, as well as the first round of formal assessment grades in Term 1.
Although you will not have Years 7-10 reports until early Term 3, we encourage you to attend the Parent-Teacher Interviews in Weeks 9 and 10 so you can discuss grades, work practices and future goals with your child’s teachers. All parents of Years 7-10 students are welcome, and we encourage you to bring your child so they can be an active part of the learning conversation. Please see Mr Matthew Bailey’s Newsletter article for details on Parent-Teacher Interviews.
Year 10 Work Experience
Next week, our Year 10 students head out on work experience to get a sense of what working life feels like. We thank Mr Bernie Maginnity for all the work that goes into organising this experience. Our students have chosen a wide variety of workplaces, and we look forward to hearing about their experiences in Week 10, which is a normal school week for all Year 10 students.
As parents of Year 10 students, this is a timely opportunity to discuss future plans with your child and look into the Stage 6 subjects that will help them move towards their chosen future. The subject selection process will begin on Day 2 of Term 3 for all Year 10 students and their families.
Term 3
Staff Development Day
Monday, 17 July, is a staff development day. All students return on Tuesday, July 18 for normal classes. Students will continue to wear winter uniform throughout Term 3.

Student Wellbeing

Screen time
A common conversation our Welfare Team has with parents is concern about the amount of time that young people are spending in front of screens. Unfortunately this concern is often not shared by these young people. The office of the e-safety Commissioner has provided the following suggestions for working with your young person to reduce their screen time:
Bullying Online
Our Welfare Team hears from parents and caregivers, as well as young people, who let us know that they, or someone they know, is being bullied online. This can become a stressful situation and it is important to know what to do when this happens. The office of the e-safety Commissioner has some excellent advice regarding what online bullying actually is and what steps to take when this occurs.
Uniform
Thank you to all those families who are supporting us to ensure our students are meeting our uniform and personal presentation expectations. These expectations can be found on pages 18 - 22 of the Parents and Students Handbook. If your young person is unable to wear the correct uniform to school, please write a note outlining the reason. This note needs to be shown to Annette Reen (Assistant Principal - Mission) who will stamp the student’s College Planner. Students without a stamp in their planner will be placed on lunch detention. Lunch detentions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Parents are advised of lunch detentions via their child’s Compass page. Students who are poorly presented can also be placed on lunch detention. Parents are notified of this concern via a google form linked to a Compass entry.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me fiona.fennamore@lism.cathollic.edu.au or 66262627.

Years 7-10 Interviews and Reports
Parent-Teacher Interviews are a valuable resource for both parents and students. We hope to see you on the two scheduled evenings in Week 9 and Week 10. Teachers will be available on Tuesday, 20 June between 4pm and 8pm for Years 7 and 9; and Tuesday, 27 June between 4pm and 8pm for Years 9 and 10. These interviews will help provide meaningful feedback regarding student progress and strategies for improvement moving forward. Bookings are available via the Compass portal and opened on Tuesday, 13 June at 12 noon. Anyone who could not make a booking and would like feedback should contact their student's individual teacher.
Year 7-10 Reports
Now that Junior Examinations are complete, Semester 1 Reports for students in Years 7-10 can be finalised. We hope to have them available early in Term 3.
When awarding A-E grades, teachers use their professional judgement to determine a student’s achievement level, based on formal and informal assessments undertaken throughout the reporting period. An overall judgement of achievement is based on data and evidence of what each student has demonstrated against the standards described in the A-E common grade scale and the NSW Syllabus documents. Our goal is to give an evidence-based account of what a student knows, is able to do and understands.
Year 10 into 11 Subject Selections
Term 3 marks the start of the Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection process. This is an important time for collaboration between families and the College to ensure that the 2024 cohort of Senior students enters into the most suitable study pattern for Years 11 and 12. A letter outlining the timeline for this process will be shared via Compass. The first step is the Leader of Learning presentations to students, which will occur on the first day students return to school in Term 3, Tuesday, 18 July. A Parent Information Evening will follow on Wednesday, 19 July. These presentations are designed to give families a basic outline of the courses available for selection and the NESA guideline surrounding the HSC and Senior years of education. It is important that students choose courses of which they are capable and in which they have an interest. We look forward to seeing families on the night of the 19th and supporting them through this important transition in their child's education.
Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations
In Week 3 of Term 3, (31 July - 14 August), our Year 12 students will undertake their HSC Trial Examinations. The importance of the Trials is that they often form the final part of each student's internal assessment mark and provide an excellent opportunity for students to boost both their school-based assessment mark and rank. Further to this, the examinations assist in preparing students for the final HSC Examinations as they provide similar timing, structure and conditions. The Trial Examinations Timetable has been distributed to students. A finalised schedule with timing and rooming will be distributed to the Year 12 cohort early in Term 3. The following link, NESA provides a variety of information to support families and students in their preparations. The resources on this site provide information about staying healthy during the HSC, including advice about effective study techniques, looking after yourself and supporting others.

St John's Day
BUILDING COMMUNITY AND CELEBRATING TRADITION
On Friday, June 30 we celebrate our College Patron, St John. This day is dedicated to the Saint after whom our College is named. St John is at the heart of our Woodlawn community. St John is the apostle of charity and the Patron Saint of love, loyalty and friendship. As a young man, he was plunged into boiling oil and suffered no injuries. Everyone who witnessed this miracle in Rome was converted to Christianity. Each day we are called to have the courage of St John to stand for what is right and just.
St John the Evangelist is symbolised by an eagle, as like all Christians, he looks on eternity without flinching as we journey towards our goal of union with God. The Eagle conveys the powers and messages of the spirit; it is our connection with the divine as it soars higher than most. The eagle is symbolic of the importance of truth, honesty, wisdom and freedom. These are key values that we attempt to promote and emulate at the College.
Check out the video link Year 12 has created to promote the day.

- Does the Canteen operate for lunch that day? All food and activities are set up around the Ovals. The Canteen will not be operating on that day.
- How much money do you recommend? All food stalls have items for sale from $5. Activities are also around this price. Don’t over purchase tickets. It depends on what you like to eat and drink and how involved you are going to be.

Looking forward to an amazing celebration!

Northern Diocesan Netball Carnival
The Northern Diocesan Netball Carnival was a new event on the sporting calendar this year - combining the previous NRCC and Lismore Diocesan Carnivals, as well as inviting boys' teams to compete. Before the day even began, team selections were competitive and saw a high standard of athleticism and talent on display, showing the depth and strength of netballers here at Woodlawn.
The Carnival was held in Tweed Heads on Tuesday, 13 June and saw Woodlawn enter eight teams - the largest contingent of netballers we have seen. All teams are to be congratulated on the way they conducted themselves throughout the day - supporting each other, being respectful to umpires and coaches and showing good sportsmanship to all of their opponents. A special mention to Indira Coble, who joined us for the day as an umpire and did an amazing job and went above and beyond without a second thought. Thanks also to all of our umpires who took on extra duties between playing their own games to ensure the day ran smoothly: Allie Robinson, Claudia Barnes, Kayty Turner, Chloe Ryall, Amarli King, Quinn McInnes and all of our Years 11/12 girls' team: Monica Bennie, Tahlia Kent, Eva McRae, Eloise Davis, Riley Alvos, Nikki McInlay, Luka Butler, Bella Griffiths and Sophie Alcorn.
Individual team reports can be found below:
Years 7/8 Girls A
Team: Claudia Barnes, Bella Duncan, Milani Kerr, Emily Marsters, Ellie McKay, McKenzie Olivieri, Willow Pace, Matilda Pope, Allie Robinson, Kayty Turner. Coach: Mrs Sally Ryall
After a slow start in their first game with St Joseph’s College, the Years 7/8 team started to come together, focusing on the basics and making connections down the court. Their next three pool games against St Mary’s, Casino, Xavier College and Mt St Pat’s were all won convincingly, sending them into the crossover semi-final against Trinity, winners of the other Pool. This game proved to be tougher than our last three games but our team stuck to their game plan, played to their strengths and were consistently strong all over the court which resulted in another win. This win meant playing off in the final against St Joseph’s College again - and we were ready for a fight! Our team came out firing, confident and steady. Half-time saw the scores being even and we knew we had to step-up if we wanted the win. The girls gave it their best shot, playing fair and strong and fought right until the final whistle. Unfortunately, after going goal for goal for almost the entire half, we went down by only two goals, placing us as Runners-Up for the day. These girls showed much determination and teamwork and improved significantly throughout the day. I am looking forward to seeing these girls take on their next challenge later in the year.
Years 7/8 Girls B
Team: Amber Bryant, Marnie Charters, Isabella De Guisti, Kirra Fowler, Lacee Faber, Alexa Johnson, Jenna Ryall, Edie Steward, Georgie White. Coach: Mrs Jasmine Andrews
The Years 7 and 8 girls started the day with two convincing wins in their first two pool games, showing great enthusiasm and teamwork. This set them up for a trip to the finals. The girls had a tough loss in the semi, which put them in the playoffs for third and fourth. They put on an impressive display of Netball in the final, holding their own with an even score until the last few minutes of the game but eventually going down and finishing the day in fourth place. This was a great introduction to their Woodlawn Netball journey.
Years 7/8 Boys
Team: Miller Layland, Cooper Williams, Zac Cohen, William Bullpit, Sonny Butler, Jonah Hudson Sheaffe, Case McQuilty, Lenny McDonald. Coach: Mr Luke Flynn
This was the first taste of Netball for many of the boys. The first game against Trinity presented some comical displays of Basketball style defending and plenty of whistle from the umpire. By the semi-final the boys had figured out some strategy and played a close game against Trinity, going down 9-5. Mt St Pat's, Murwillumbah put up a good fight in our third place play-off but thanks to some sharp shooting in the second half, we finished the game in front, with a tightly contested 2-1 scoreline in the end. Well done to all the students who I hope will be back next year to defend their third place crown!
Years 9/10 Girls A
Team: Harper Bailey, Alanna Bromhead, Ruby Campbell, Madison Coppola, Taia Kempshall, Amarli King, Quinn McInnes, Willow Robinson, Chloe Ryall. Coach: Ms Jane Farrugia
The girls had a brilliant day of Netball, only dropping one game throughout the pool. After a well fought semi-final they were unlucky to go down in the Grand Final in extra time. A big shout out to the girls who had also come off the back of the State Titles in Newcastle the weekend prior.
Years 9/10 Girls B
Team: Ava Allan, Ilaria Blenkhorn, Molly Cronin, Abigail Glendinning, Evie Butler, Ayla Smith, Frankie Smith, Chloe Weston. Coach: Ms Annabelle Green
For some of these girls, it was their first opportunity to represent the College in Netball. They grew as a team across the day and learned some new skills and strategies while training in between games. They should all be proud of the way they rose to the challenge as they each played with determination, enthusiasm and smiles on their faces.
Winning one game out of their three pool games, the girls went through to the fifth v sixth play-off. This game against St Mary’s, Casino, proved to be a tough game, resulting in a sixth placing for the day.
Years 9/10 Boys
Team: Noah Vakararawa, Oliver Walker, Leo Smith, Matthew Gillan, Rio Carter, Jimmy McCombie, Keenan Faber, Elliott Farrell, Billie Drooger, Josh Holland. Coach: Ms Natasha Wotherspoon
The Years 9/10 boys team had an excellent day competing against other schools in the Diocese. The boys had a great energy and outlook on the day, giving their all. They won five out of their six games for the day allowing them to play in the finals. Unfortunately, they ended up losing in the final against Trinity but still played with great skill and sportsmanship. The boys should be very proud of how they competed on the day.
Years 11/12 Girls
Team: Monica Bennie, Tahlia Kent, Eva McRae, Eloise Davis, Riley Alvos, Nikki McKinlay, Luka Butler, Bella Griffiths, Sophie Alcorn. Coach: Ms Jane Farrugia
There were some hard fought games played by this wonderful team of netballers. During four of their seven games, the girls went into half-time down a few goals. Each time they rallied and came home strong, going through the day undefeated with an epic win against St Joseph’s in the Grand Final. A huge thank you to the girls who also took on much of the umpiring responsibilities throughout the day. They were all incredibly worthy ambassadors for the College.
Years 11/12 Boys
Team: Jacob Robinson, Tom Welman, Flynn Lawrence-Daly, Luca Parsonage, Lucas Woolven, Harry Gillett, Noah Dougherty, Darrell Studders, Jett Elmore. Coach: Mr Tom McKeown
In what proved to be an entertaining, loud and positive team of netballers, the Years 11/12 boys showed some moments of brilliance throughout the day. Their style of play could be described as confident, quick and impulsive but it allowed them to win two out of three of their round matches against Mt St Pat’s and Trinity. The boys' competition ended up with three teams on equal points, showing how close this competition was - based on points differential, we played Mt St Pat’s in our semi-final and won this game easily. This then led us to the final against Trinity. In a hotly contested game, with pride on the line and only nine minute halves to try to take the lead, the game ended up as a draw. Based on a little known rule that the first goal scorer wins in a tied game, we were declared the Runners-Up. By the end of the day, these boys had learned many rules about Netball and learned how to work together as a team. Netball truly was the winner!
