From the Principal

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

I am happy to advise that the school year has commenced remarkably smoothly, despite the predicted Omicron disruptions, with daily case numbers and close contacts remaining relatively low and trending downwards, per capita. With this in mind, we are planning to run a number of traditional, annual activities as ‘normally’ as possible after restrictions ease on 28 February (TBC). These activities include:

Twilight Inter-House Swimming Carnival (Friday afternoon/evening, 11 March). I have it on good authority that this is one of the highlights of the Woodlawn calendar and we hope, given it is an outdoor event, that parents and friends will be able to join us on the evening;

Open Night (Wednesday afternoon/evening 16 March). This will run following a similar programme to 2021, with two sessions commencing at 5.00pm and 7.00pm.

We also plan to celebrate our formal Leadership Transition Ceremony for our incoming Student Leadership Team (postponed from 2021) and our College Opening Mass. Once dates for these celebrations have been confirmed they will be communicated to you. I was particularly impressed with the standard of our Year 11 SRC speeches, which I had the privilege of listening to this morning.

Best wishes to our Year 12 students who will be on their Senior Retreat next week. While we have had to make some minor modifications to the programme, I’m sure it is still going to be a memorable experience and one of the highlights of their Senior year.

While the NSW Premier did flag a number of changes to COVID-19 restrictions to take effect today and next Friday (25/02/22) during yesterday’s press conference, this advice is yet to be formalised to schools so the following information remains current at time of print:

The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve with updates to advice and regulations often changing on a daily basis. It is therefore imperative that students who are displaying even the slightest signs of illness remain at home. A reminder that should a student become unwell during the course of a school day they will be required to be collected from the Student Services Office, as is standard College procedure.

Daily text messages notifying you of the number of positive COVID-19 cases amongst our school community will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Please monitor your sons and daughters for symptoms on a daily basis and bring forward their Rapid Antigen Test, if necessary. We are yet to receive confirmation regarding the possible continuation of Rapid Antigen Tests beyond Week 4.

As at 2 February 2022, the requirement for positive cases to test on Day 6 has been removed. This applies to both students and staff.

  • If you have been a positive case and do not have symptoms at Day 7, you no longer need to test before leaving self-isolation. For example, if you were tested at 10am on Tuesday, you can leave isolation at 10am on the following Tuesday if you do not have a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath.
  • If you have been a positive case and still do have symptoms, you are to remain in isolation until 24 hours after your symptoms have resolved. If you are not getting better or you are concerned, please consult your GP.

Students who have recovered from COVID-19 and have been released from isolation before other positive cases in their household will not need to self-isolate or test unless they develop new COVID-19 symptoms.

The Day 6 testing requirement remains in place for close (household) contacts.

The wearing of surgical grade masks remains compulsory in secondary schools in all indoor settings (for both students and staff).

Additional cleaning measures remain in place at the College for Term 1. Students are still being encouraged to practise social distancing and restrict themselves to mixing within their immediate year levels only, where possible.

Thank you for your full and ongoing support with what is essentially an ‘honour system’ here. When we all work together, we keep our Woodlawn community safe (and OPEN) for everyone.

I offer the following prayer as this fortnight’s reflection for your perusal:

A Blessing Prayer

Jesus, give us the wisdom and courage to be humble in a world that glorifies power and fame;
Give us the wisdom and courage to cry because we know you are with us always;
Give us the wisdom and courage to remain gentle and to be mindful of the truth that all we have and know comes through you;
Give us the wisdom and courage to do what is right, even when what is right is not what is popular or easy;
Give us the wisdom and courage to be forgiving because it is easy to forget what you did for us;
Give us the wisdom and courage to be pure of heart, even when we feel overwhelmed by uncertainty, fear, or a need to be popular;
Give us the wisdom and courage to be peacemakers and friend makers in a world torn apart by bullying, gossip, and violence;
Jesus, give us the wisdom and courage to serve our loving God by supporting one another to be and become the very best that we can be with you as our guide.

Amen.

On behalf of the entire College community, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to our Science Assistant, Mrs Leigh Tickner, whose mother was buried today. May she rest in peace.

Finally, ex-students and families of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, South Lismore will by now have heard the news that long-serving Parish Priest, Fr Peter Karam, is retiring at the end of February. Fr Peter has been a wonderful supporter of Woodlawn over the years, especially in his former role as Diocesan Media Adviser. On behalf of all at the College, I offer Fr Peter a heartfelt vote of thanks and all the very best of wishes for a happy and healthy retirement.

Enjoy the fortnight ahead.

Sincerely
Aaron Beach

PAT-Testing Years 7-10
During Weeks 3 and 4 our students in Years 7-10 will undo a series of PAT adaptive assessments in their English, Mathematics and Science classes that will allow us to gain a precise picture of student achievement in reading, Mathematics and Science. This diagnostic tool addresses the proficiencies of fluency, understanding, problem solving and reasoning.

The test is completed in class and takes forty (40) minutes. It is not a test that students need to prepare for. They simply attend on the day and log into the test and complete the assigned multiple choice questions.

From the Assistant Principal - Mission

I would like to congratulate our students who have shown a great deal of commitment to beginning 2022 with energy, enthusiasm and respectfulness. The general buzz around the College is one of gratitude and care. Everyone is appreciating having face-to-face classes.

I have included some photos of our students going about their everyday business with a positive attitude. You will also note that any indoor photos have met the current mask requirements!

Our SRC are keen to promote our Woodlawn community spirit this year through a range of activities. On Monday, they delivered chocolate roses to students and staff who had supported the launch of our fundraising for Project Compassion. ‘We really loved the smiles on the faces of those receiving the roses… it made my day’ (Liam Weekes).

Leadership
This week the conversations across year groups turned towards Student Leadership. The SRC facilitated a Q and A session around this theme during lunch last Thursday. They followed this up by attending a similar session with Years 9 and 10. One of the SRC goals this year is to have a higher profile by going out and meeting more of the students across the year levels. They are highly motivated and approachable. The strengthening of our community will definitely be enhanced through this initiative. Year 9 students also participated in a personal goal setting exercise that promoted the idea of ‘legacy and personal growth and development’. It was heartening to meet so many students who value their role in creating community through relationships. Our next Newsletter will feature our elected leaders.

Our Mission is to ‘enable our students to live life to the full’. Our staff encourage and promote a range of opportunities that enables this to happen for our students. The following opportunities are designed to promote wellbeing, personal growth and community building.

Please encourage your students to take up the optional activities:

  • TEC (The Environment Club)
    The stewardship and care of our environment is at the heart of their work. Students from any year level can join this club. There are currently plans for fifty (50) students to sign-up for Clean-Up Australia Day. This will take place around the College grounds on Monday, 7 March (3.30-5pm). Mr Base will be promoting this and students will need to submit parental permission via the usual forms. These will be available by emailing bryn.base@lism.catholic.edu.au or by collecting a form at the SSO. All students receive commendations for this valuable activity.
  • Social Justice Committee
    Year 10 students are invited to be part of this group of highly motivated students with a passion for equity and justice. This group meets on Thursdays (Day 4) at lunchtime. We live out the Marist call to ‘form strong minds and gentle hearts’ through service, witness and solidarity. This team promotes and educates the community about various groups beginning with Caritas and Project Compassion.
  • Junior Justice Team
    We are planning on forming a Junior Justice Team for those students in Years 7 and 8 who are keen to be involved in learning about social justice and helping with our projects. Stay tuned for more on this as we move into March.
  • St Vincent de Paul Society
    This group meets fortnightly and is for Senior students. Any student in Years 11 or 12 can join this community service group.
  • International Women's Day
    We are planning a luncheon for this day with a guest speaker. Students are invited to attend.  This ‘high tea’ style lunch will be catered by our Hospitality class. $25 ticket. This is open to all members of our College community (COVID-19 restrictions permitting). Dr Sally Towns (Director - Lismore CSO) will address the luncheon. Tickets will be available in Week 5.
  • Lead Conference
    (For Year 11 Students) Mr Jones has all the details of this opportunity to learn how to be the best version of yourself.
  • Chess Club
    This is for any student with a desire to learn and compete. They meet every Wednesday in the Reynold Room at 1.30pm.
  • Library Lovers
    The Library is always keen for volunteers from any year level to join them in serving our community. Student librarians are noted for their dedication and commitment.
  • Duke of Edinburgh
    This is open to students in Year 8 and above. It is an internationally recognised award that promotes goal setting and personal growth. Students work in the areas of skill, service, adventurous journeys and physical activity. We have a proud tradition of students receiving awards ranging bronze through to Gold. To sign-up contact Mr Bailey or Mr Mason.
  • E Sports - Students from Years 7-10 can compete in the new E Sports competition using Nintendo switch. This competition is every Tuesday and Thursday. Students represent the College in this Diocesan competition.
  • Sports - There are so many opportunities for students to be part of teams and individual sports at the College. The Daily Bulletin is the place to source this information.

Looking to the weeks ahead:

  • Ash Wednesday: Liturgies across stages;
  • Open Night: A chance to volunteer and showcase our College Community (Wed, 16 March);
  • ANZAC Day March: Monday, 25 April. (The beginning of Term 2). We encourage all students to participate in the ANZAC Marches either in Lismore or in their own local communities. Permission notes will be available once details of the Marches are finalised. Students need to wear full winter uniform, including blazers. This is something you might like to prepare for early. Winter Uniform is compulsory in Term 2.
  • Senior Retreat: Thanks to parents of Year 12 students for the quick turnaround with the permission forms. A full report will be included in our next Newsletter.

Please email me annette.reen@lism.catholic.edu.au if you need any further information.

With Social Justice Sunday in mind, we reflect on the words of Pope Francis as we endeavour to live our Mission:

‘To all people of goodwill who are working for social justice: never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity!'

Ministry Matters

I sincerely hope that the last fortnight has brought as much excitement and joy to your lives as it has for me. We have had an incredibly exciting time in the world of Woodlawn Ministry. Of particular note are the Senior Retreat and numerous student formation opportunities that will take place at a Diocesan level over the coming weeks. I look forward to talking with students and parents regarding these great opportunities as they arise.

Lead Conference
We are incredibly excited to confirm that LEAD Conference 2022 has been confirmed. LEAD is a Student Leaders Conference that enhances Senior Ministry Teams of Year 11 and 12 students to be equipped for ministry at Woodlawn by nurturing their own faith and developing them into supportive communities.  Returning from LEAD, our students will be encouraged and assisted to meet regularly to support each other and to facilitate Youth Ministry initiatives within the College and at regional events such as SHINE.

This year, we’re looking forward to taking our newly appointed Year 11 SRC leaders and other interested students to develop their shared understanding of what it is to be a student leader in our faith community.

I will update the community through the next two Newsletters on the progress of our Senior Ministry Team and this great experience.

Transitus - Year 7
Yet another Diocesan student Discipleship Retreat will take place for our Year 7 students in Week 8 of this term. We recognise that many of our students have been leaders of faith communities within their Primary Schools in recent years and really enjoy the chance to see them continue their formation and growth through the Transitus Retreat.

Details are yet to be finalised for this opportunity, so interested Year 7 students should await a visit from members of our Ministry Team in the coming weeks with more information. If you have any questions or wish to know more about the Diocesan Student Discipleship Continuum, please contact me.

2022 Senior Retreat
Our Year 12 cohort head off to PCYC Bornhoffen next week for their Senior Retreat. In a slightly different program to allow for COVID-safe practice, it is very exciting to be able to provide this opportunity for our Senior students.

Retreat is often regarded as one of the highlights of the student experience of Woodlawn. Great thanks needs to go to Mrs Reen, Mr Andrews, Tash Wotherspoon, Hollie Beston and Luke Rowling for their work in making the Retreat a reality for our students. We look forward to reporting on this after the Retreat.

Lent
This most important season in the Liturgical year is fast approaching. The season of Lent calls us again to reflect on the meaning to be found in the gospel and the call to a more intimate relationship with the Lord.

This year, as we are moved to change some of our traditional practises within our liturgical celebrations, our Ash Wednesday Liturgies will take place with some differences. The Jesuit Priest and teacher, Fr. Chris Middleton SJ writes on the practice of wearing ashes: “In the ritual of using the mark of the cross in ashes, we express our faith by standing together, in our human solidarity, acknowledging the truth that our mortality is real and is shared. Ashes remind us all that all human beings share a brokenness…”

From that shared brokenness, we are able to band together in the forms of commitment to prayer, fasting (in some form) and almsgiving (some charitable or personal commitment). During our Ash Wednesday Liturgies, students will be called upon to consider ways in which they might be able to commit to the lenten promise in preparation for Easter and the grace that is imparted to us in our faith through the risen Christ.

Some students take up the challenge of having a 'detox' from social media, others make an effort to make more meaningful connections in their lives and others consider the luxuries in their lives and try to live more simply in this time of preparation for Easter.

We look forward to sharing some photos of our Ash Wednesday Liturgies and look forward to walking through the Lenten season as a community.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

Take Care,

Nick Jones
Leader of School Evangelisation

Student Wellbeing

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I am not sure how the return to school has been from your perspective, but here at the College there is a sense of calm and a general buzz of enthusiasm. Our students have settled well into the routine - and many are looking forward to involving themselves in all that the College has to offer. I would encourage all students to engage in as many activities as possible, as the more involved they are the greater their level of connectedness. This level of connectedness is a significant factor in not only academic achievement but overall wellbeing.

Not only do we have Year 7 students who are new to our school, but we have many new students in other year groups also. The transition to a new school can be both challenging and rewarding - and as parents and caregivers it can be sometimes difficult to find out exactly how your young person is feeling. Here is a tip sheet that can assist you to find out how the transition is progressing.

Internet guide for parents
As parents and caregivers we know that our young people can spend a lot of time on the internet. Today’s young people are growing up in an environment filled with media and technology, and it can be hard to know how it is affecting their lives in both positive and negative ways.

Did you know:

  • Teens aged 13-17 spend an average of almost nine hours per day using screen media;
  • 88% of adolescents own a desktop or laptop computer, and 95% own a smartphone;
  • 45% of adolescents say they are online “almost constantly”;
  • 54% of adolescents say they spend too much time on their  mobile phone;
  • 65% of parents worry about their teen spending too much time in front of screens.

Here is a link to an American publication that is well worth a read as it covers a range of issues to help parents navigate their teen's life online.  Topics include: mental health, physical health, social skills, substance abuse and time management, among others.

Mathematic News

The start of the school year has brought lots of excitement and enthusiasm towards learning in Maths lessons, which is encouraging to see. Students are keen to do their best work and improve their knowledge and hopefully this positive beginning continues right throughout 2022!

Parents are often keen to assist students with their Mathematics homework and study, but sometimes they can be unsure where to start - things may have changed since the last time they were in a Maths classroom! A few useful resources that may assist to best support your child include:

  • Eddie Woo’s video lessons (Maths teacher superstar) - aligned to the NSW Syllabus;
  • Khan Academy - an international resource of quality video lessons;
  • Everyday Maths - a NSW Government site full of fun, practical and creative mathematics activities.

Mathematics students at St John’s also have a subscription to an online support resource, depending on their grade and level of Maths.

  • Year 7 students have access to Edrolo - an online textbook, including videos and practice questions. Year 7 all have login details to be able to access this resource.
  • Years 8 to 10 students all have access to Mathspace. Students have login details to access this resource. Lessons and practice questions are available.
  • Year 11 and 12 students also have access to Edrolo.

There are also two opportunities to access additional and personal support:

  • ‘Maths & Mentos’ is on every Tuesday at lunchtime in Room 26. All students are welcome to attend and ask any questions that they may have with their homework or classwork. This is advertised in the Daily Bulletin every week and yes, Mentos are actually available!
  • An after school 'Homework Hub' is held in the Library every Monday from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. This is available for students of all subjects but there is always a Maths teacher available.

Both of these sessions are available for students to just turn up; there is no requirement to book or attend every week.

The first student (or parent!) who finds a solution to Puzzle 51 and gets it to me via email or in person, will receive a small prize.

Next week is a special occasion in the Mathematics calendar, Tuesday is 22/02/2022. Keep an eye on the daily bulletin for a mathematical challenge related to this remarkable and rare day!

History and Geography Competitions

This year the Humanities department has enrolled all Years 7-10 students in the National History and Geography Competitions. All students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in the Geography competition, whilst all students in Years 8 and 10 will sit the History competition paper. These are low-stakes exam-style tests that allow students to apply their knowledge of skills and concepts in a non-threatening examination setting. The competitions are not based on prior knowledge and thus allow students to extend, explore and reflect on their learning. Entry fees ($7 per student) will be added to student fees.

Anyone wishing to make alternative arrangements should make contact via the College Office.

Careers Update

This fortnight information about Universities and courses has started to flow in. UAC have clarified 'what is an ATAR' and we have included information about Medical degrees and a range of other updates, including the Regional Scholarship program. While it is early in the year for students to make final decisions about courses, it is not too early to set realistic goals with the upcoming Year 12 Half Yearly Examination period fast approaching. The most important thing to take from these examinations is the feedback from your teachers. Use this feedback to inform your writing, look for gaps in your knowledge, then continue to improve your responses and exam techniques.

We are planning for Year 10 students to undertake work experience once again this year, so we ask parents of Year 10 students to begin to have conversations about what interests, skills and career aspirations they might have in order to seek opportunities to explore these through work experience. Also included below are some early work experience opportunities which we have come across recently.

With the postponement of this Year’s University Roadshow for Years 11 and 12 students, we are investigating other options to provide this information to students and families. This event, which provides families with access to directly ask questions to a range of tertiary institutions, has proved quite useful in the past so please stay tuned for more information.

Please take a moment to review the positions vacant below and either apply directly or speak with Mr Maginnity for further information.

Please follow this link for the full version of the careers update.

Bernie Maginnity
Vocational Pathways Coordinator

Unlike the usual traineeship programs, we retain our undergraduates after they graduate and support them through the next phases of their career such as completion of the Chartered Accountants (CA Program) and beyond.

We are currently interviewing and recruiting for our 2023 cohort. If you are interested, please see the attached brochure for further information including how to apply.

Dental Assistant/Dental Nurse
An opportunity exists for a student or recent graduate to be trained as a Dental Nurse in a prominent Casino Dental Surgery. Catholic Schools Parent Assembly

The Parent Assembly supports parents as they seek to improve their understanding of child development and parenting skills. Opportunities are provided for parents to enhance their knowledge and skills through seminars, topical workshops and expert guest speakers. Since its beginning in 1995, the Parent Assembly has provided parenting education opportunities for parents in the following areas:

The Canteen has introduced a Fast-Track line for students who have pre-ordered to collect their lunches, making it much easier and quicker for students.
