From the Principal
Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
I had the privilege of joining our Year 12 students on their annual Retreat last week at Camp Bornhoffen. Despite the inclement weather, students made the most of the opportunity to re-connect with their innerselves, classmates and teachers. Special thanks to Mrs Annette Reen for her organisation, our YMOs who led many of the sessions, staff who attended and also to Fr Bing, who made the special effort to join us for the three days. I have every confidence that 2021 is going to be a great year for the College, under the tutelage of our Seniors.
Our 2022 Enrolment period has begun and no doubt you have already seen and heard various advertisements for the College. Regardless of how formally we market ourselves, the very best form of advertising for any College is the students themselves and I know our current Woodlawn students are great ambassadors for the College in the public domain. If you have family or friends whose son/daughter is commencing high school in 2022, please invite them to see what a Woodlawn education has to offer their child for their secondary education. Although it will look somewhat different to previous years given the COVID restrictions, we will be hosting an ‘Open Night’ on Tuesday, 16 March across two sessions (5.00pm and 7.00pm). Bookings are essential and can be made via our Website: http://www.lisjclism.catholic.edu.au/enrolment/timeline-for-enrolment-procedure
We are blessed at St John’s to have a very active Parents & Friends Association. Our next meeting will be next Monday afternoon, 8 March, at 5.30pm in the College Library. The AGM will also be held on Monday night. Special thanks to President, Mrs Lisa Love and her Executive team, who do great work for us here at the College. I have genuinely appreciated their counsel as I familiarise myself with the College. Our P&F are also currently running their annual raffle – details of which are included elsewhere in this Newsletter. Please be generous in your support.
It was an honour to join Mrs Annette Reen (AP – Mission), Luke Rowling (Ministry Captain) and Eva Crotty (Year 11 SRC) at Fr Bob Barber’s Requiem Mass in Sydney today. Not only was Fr Bob fittingly farewelled after his life of service, but it provided the opportunity for the wider Marist family to gather. Details of our Woodlawn Requiem Mass for Fr Bob are as follows: Saturday, 20 March, 10am in the College Chapel and afterwards at Lismore Heights Bowling Club. Bookings are essential via the College Website: http://www.lisjclism.catholic.edu.au/
In staffing news, Ms Thea Kennedy has announced her retirement from our Eagle Centre staff. We thank Thea for her dedicated work over the past twenty years and wish her all the very best in the future.
While there have been no additional COVID-19 updates since last Newsletter, it is imperative that students who are displaying even the slightest signs of illness remain at home. A reminder that should a student become unwell during the course of a school day they will be required to be collected from the Student Services Office ASAP to minimise the risk of cross-infection.
As per NSW Health advice, people displaying symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, dry cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache) are advised to get tested. A student or staff member who has been unwell cannot return to school unless proof of a negative COVID-19 test has been provided. There are several local testing centres aside from your local GP, including Lismore Base Hospital and Ballina Respiratory Clinic. Visit the NSW Health website for further details.
Current Public Health Orders can also be found at: health.nsw.gov.au by clicking on COVID-19 (Case Alerts). These lists are updated daily and if you have recently travelled you must follow the mandatory isolation guidelines stringently.
Additional cleaning measures remain in place at the College and while social distancing is not officially required of students in schools, students are restricted to mixing within their immediate year levels only, where possible, and have also been asked to refrain from close interactions with other students and staff.
Finally, I provide the following brief excerpt as this fortnight’s Lenten Reflection:
In this Season of Lent, some contemplation on the command, to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart’ is entirely warranted, because it is exactly what it claims to be: an honest invitation to a much deeper trust in, and vulnerability with, God. As human beings we do pretty well with control, advance notice, and probable outcomes. We like balancing equations. Years of disappointments may have taught us to safeguard and hold back the soft and vulnerable parts of ourselves, those most prone to pain. Perhaps it is all part of the programming we have cultivated to protect ourselves throughout our lives - giving and loving in measured amounts. And yet the invitation is there, God wants the whole messy affair that is the human heart. All of it. God wants our unspoken dreams, our daring creativity, our bold decisions, our shaky steps forward, our moments of distrust and our trust in the uncertain and in the hidden; isn’t that truly what faith is?’ (Adapted from ‘The Soul’ – CSO Lismore)
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely

Year 12 Assessment
Next week Year 12 will embark on their second round of school-based assessment for the HSC. I wish you all well. It is important to realise that there is a direct correlation between effective home revision and strong academic results, regardless of your natural ability. Students need to organise their time wisely and seek clarification on any misunderstood concepts. Dot point summaries using a variety of resources, formulating responses to past HSC Examination papers and practice essays that allow teacher feedback are all vital. The assessment results will give a fair indicator of where each student is at with their learning. These assessments provide an opportunity for formal teacher feedback and give students an indication of where extra help or work is required. It is important to note that the HSC Examinations are not until October and school-based assessments along the way prepare students for these Examinations.
Monday Afternoon Tutoring
A number of staff members will be in the Library every Monday from 3.30pm-4.30pm to help any students who wish to attend, in any subject area. It was pleasing to see so many students utilising this resource last Monday. This is a valuable opportunity for all students.

Head Heart Hands
During the Season of Lent it is important for us to take time for reflection and discernment about our behaviour, our relationships and how we wish to be seen as living a Christian life. I have included this summary of ideas from Pope Francis. This reflection is something that you could do as a family as the sentiments expressed are important for everyone’s growth.
On the 22nd of February we had the Honour of attending Bishop Jarrett’s Jubilee celebrations at St Carthage’s Cathedral. It was an opportunity to revisit the value of servant leadership and to reaffirm our commitment to serving our community with love and care. The message of HOPE is clearly evident throughout the Mass with a focus on looking to future generations taking up the mantle and living out the Gospel values in their lives. We were represented by our College Leadership Team whose exemplary behaviour and commitment to being the face of our College is second to none.
I would like to commend the parents of our Senior Students for assisting in preparing and supporting them to attend our Senior Retreat. The students were respectful, reflective and open to allowing us to accompany them on their 2021 journey. Your letters were received with gratitude and much appreciation. Our staff are to be commended for their dedication, their counsel and their capacity to share this time with our students. I hope that some students or families have chosen to take the time to email these amazing people. Our staff are generous with their time and are committed to encouraging our students to ‘live life to the full’. I have included some quotes from our feedback. We are truly blessed to have shared this experience.
‘That it was an amazing and rewarding experience and you get out what you put into it.’
‘It was one of the highlights from my time at woodlawn.’
‘That it's the most rewarding one out of all the camps and that you'll share some precious moments and insights that will make your outlook on your year and year group understandable.’
‘Even though I didn't want to go I enjoyed it in the end and definitely recommend going.’
‘For me, it was such an incredible and unique experience that I really enjoyed. As much as you might hear it, it is so true when people say what you put in you get out.’
Nine members of my Ministry class had the opportunity to share their peer to peer ministry skills with Stage 3 students this week. With the words of Hebrews echoing in their minds ‘and let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, but encouraging one another’ these Year 10 students shared their faith experiences to all gathered. Our students also challenged participants to see their actions as Christians as deeds reflecting our Gospel Values. At the heart of all interactions is the value of Human Dignity. Dignity is at the forefront of all we do. We are justifiably proud of the courage of these young Christians to share and minister to young primary school students.
A timely reminder that during Lent we are supporting the vital work of Caritas. The Social Justice Committee, with the help of our YMOs, are actively encouraging Home Groups to purchase Hearts of Hope over the next five weeks.
Just a reminder that if you can be anything, BE KIND.

Ministry Matters
2021 has started with a flurry of opportunities for our students to engage with and deepen their faith in Christ and connect with each other in this light. We have a number of Student Discipleship opportunities that will occur over the course of this year, two of which are coming up in the next three weeks.
LEAD Conference
Our Year 11 Ministry leaders will attend the LEAD Conference next week at McAuley Catholic College, Grafton. We are very excited for these senior leaders to have this opportunity to grow in their own faith and develop their confidence to be a guiding presence in our school for their peers and younger students alike. The conference theme of “Rise - Connected, Committed & Courageous” resonates with our College focus on 'Strong Relationships Build Positive Communities'. Staff and students alike are very keen for the LEAD Conference this year and will report on their experience in our next Newsletter.
Transitus
At the other end of our College experience is the Transitus Year 7 Student Discipleship Retreat. This will occur at the end of Week 9 and presents an opportunity for 14 of our students to meet, learn and pray with other like-minded peers on their faith journey. This retreat always proves to be very popular amongst students, so the application process will focus on the criteria for attendance as determined by the Catholic Schools Office. These criteria are that students:
- Regularly attend Mass;
- Are involved in some other form of Church involvement either at school or in the parish;
- Show initiative, common sense and maturity, and
- Are seeking to grow in these areas.
Applications were handed out this week on Thursday and all students are welcome to apply. The deadline for these applications is Friday 12 March. If any students or parents wish to discuss this retreat further, please do not hesitate to contact me or Mrs Annette Reen.
Family Faith Life
If there are any questions that you may have about sacramental programs or parish initiatives, please do not hesitate to be in touch with me. It would be my absolute pleasure to be able to assist you and your families in entering more fully into parish life and your own faith in Jesus Christ.

Student Welfare
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As parents, it can be difficult to navigate the cyber world of our children. Beacon App is a no-cost app that contains up to date and evidence-based online safety information that will help parents and carers support their children’s digital behaviour and reduce online harms. The app can be downloaded via Google play and the App store. Here is a short youtube clip explaining some of the features of the app.
At St John’s we have zero tolerance for bullying. Bullying is defined as an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. (Bullying. NoWay!) We encourage families to let us know if their child is being bullied. Working together with the school is the best way to help your child resolve bullying issues. Woodlawn will be participating in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence on Friday, March 19 and we have a number of activities planned.
The eSafety's commission has a parent guide to cyberbullying and online drama. This free one hour webinar will look at how parents and carers can support young people to have safe and respectful online relationships and what to do if things go wrong. Available times are as follows:
− Tuesday 16 March 7.30pm - 8.30pm
− Wednesday 17 March 12.30pm - 1.30pm
− Wednesday 17 March 7.30pm - 8.30pm
− Thursday 18 March 3.30pm - 4.30pm
− Monday 22 March 12.30pm - 1.30pm

Over the last two weeks, Year 7 students have completed a survey designed by reachout.com that has provided the College with information about individual students so that we can get to know them better. Over the next two weeks, during Pastoral Care lessons, the students will be completing another short survey to identify how the cohort is adapting to high school. Questions are on topics that include homework, social media use, stressors and support networks. If there are any issues identified, these are then able to be addressed in a timely manner.
The Welfare Team at the College have been busy supporting our students in their return to school. This has mostly been a smooth transition; however, there have been some instances where students have not been behaving in the manner we would expect. Those students who consistently contravene our expectations with low-grade misdemeanours will be held accountable for their actions. Our behaviour management is based on restorative practices that support students to make positive choices that will be beneficial to them and the wider community.
The students have generally been wearing the uniform well this term.
Some students have been asked to address specific areas of uniform and we appreciated your support in doing so. We also ask that a note is provided if a student is unable to wear the correct uniform.
I would like to wish Year 12 well in their Half-Yearly Examinations that begin next week. I encourage them to maintain positive, healthy routines during this time so they can achieve the results of which they are capable. Please refer to the most recent Newsletter for study hints.
We are fortunate on our Welfare Team to have two Counsellors. Christina Hazell is currently on maternity leave until Term 4. Jessica Godfrey is our sole Counsellor during this time. Jess has provided the following information for you to get to know her:
I feel incredibly fortunate to be working with the Woodlawn community this year. I started my career in mental health in 2013 as a school Counsellor at St Joseph’s Primary, South Murwillumbah, before completing my postgraduate qualifications in Clinical Psychology and moving into a specialist service for young people with emerging psychosis and related mental health conditions. Following three years of work in this field, I decided to return to school counselling and took a position at Woodlawn in 2019. I have been lucky enough to remain in the role since.
The School Counselling service is available to any student at Woodlawn, with a focus on brief interventions (i.e., 4 - 5 sessions) to support their social-emotional development. The School Counsellors can also provide an avenue for external mental health professionals to liaise with school staff to arrange appropriate support for your child. Referrals to the service can be made directly with Jessica via email (jessica.godfrey@lism.catholic.edu.au), or through your child’s Year Coordinator or another member of the Student Welfare team.

From the HSIE Faculty
Welcome back to 2021.
Staff and students in HSIE classrooms have certainly returned with a lot to debate and discuss. From post-Coronavirus economies, to a new President of the United States, to ongoing Climate Change debates, it has been wonderful to engage with students who are eager and aware of what is happening in our local and global communities.
Here is a snapshot of what has been happening and what is coming up on our calendars.
Fieldwork
In Week 4 our Year 12 Geography students along with Mrs Fennamore, Mr Seymour and Mr Bailey travelled to Moreton Island to undertake three days of fieldwork as a part of their formal assessment. The 2021 HSC class undertook a variety of investigations to support their study of the Ecosystems at Risk unit. Students looked closely at the formation of the third-largest sand island in the world and the many interactions that take place to maintain a dynamic equilibrium within its diverse range of ecosystems. The group of seventeen Year 12’s engaged in a series of presentations from the Tangalooma ‘eco-rangers’ covering a variety of content to support the syllabus. Activities included investigations into the island’s geomorphology and plant studies, indigenous history and two 4WD safari’s to explore the range of environments of both the southern and northern ends of the island. Areas of significance included the Mirrapools, the Big and Little Sandhills, North Point and Cape Moreton. Other highlights included snorkelling the Wrecks at Tangalooma, feeding wild dolphins and a discussion with the owner of the Moreton Bay Rock Oyster aquaculture facility. The data gathered from the trip will be used to gain a deeper understanding of how ecosystems can be both vulnerable and resilient to change and further used to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional and contemporary management techniques for a sustainable future. The students were excellent representatives of the College and enjoyed a productive hands-on approach to their learning (see the photo gallery).
Looking ahead, our Year 11 students will have the opportunity to take to the field to further immerse themselves in the ‘Biophysical Interactions’ unit covered under the Preliminary Geography course. The Year 11 trip involves a day of kayaking on the Brunswick River investigating one of the Far North Coast’s most beautiful estuarine environments. Further details will come out in the near future.
Stage 6
With Half-Yearly Examinations about to begin, our Year 12 students have been working closely with teachers to revise content and prepare for this first round of examinations in their HSC year. Undertaking examinations are an important part of the learning process. As results come back, I encourage students to reflect on their study habits and to seek feedback from teachers regarding successes and areas for improvement. This self-assessment and feedback is vital to ensure that students have a clear understanding of how they are progressing and to ensure they can best prepare for their final assessments.
This is also a timely reminder for our Year 11 cohort that their first round of examinations is coming up in Weeks One and Two of Term Two. Year 11 students should now be seeking advice from their teachers with regards to the best approach to developing a clear study plan for exam preparation.
Monday Afternoon Tutorials
As we approach examinations, students are encouraged to attend Monday afternoon tutorials in the Library, from 3:30- 4:30pm. Teachers from a range of KLAs, including HSIE, will be available to assist students in revision and preparation for their examinations.
Learning Extension
As was the case last year, the HSIE Department will again look to extend students in both History and Geography by way of entering students in their respective KLA National Competitions. A small entry fee will be added to the student fees for payment to enable participation (approximately $7). Anyone wishing to make alternative arrangements should make contact via the School Office. More detail will follow as the competition dates approach.

Responsibility for Learning
Whilst feedback on assessment is important, so too is the feedback students receive regarding their Classroom Practice and Learning Behaviour. Round 1 of the Responsibility For Learning (RFL) framework will be completed by the end of Week 5, with results available for reflection soon after via the student Schoolworx portal. I encourage all parents to engage in meaningful discussion with their children relating to this important feedback about their application and progress in class.
Students wanting to continue to do well and those looking to make improvements towards achievable learning goals should take this opportunity to self-evaluate and seek guidance from teachers on ways in which they can improve.
We look forward to an exciting and productive year and encourage all of our HSIE students to continue to be inquisitive, conscientious and engaged learners.

Senior Geography - Student Reflection
The Year 12 Geography Class, Mr Bailey, Mr Seymour and Mrs Fennamore had the privilege of attending a three day field trip to Moreton Island on the 17, 18 and 19 of February.
The three day trip enabled the class to collect data and learn more about the Coastal Dune Ecosystem, that is Moreton Island. The activities we undertook as well as the talks and educational presentations we attended enabled us to better understand the Moreton Island ecosystems as well as explore its beauty.
Despite the rocky ferry ride, caused by the rain and tidal conditions, and the heavy downpour that we were greeted with, the first activity of the trip began with smiles on all faces and a buzz of excitement. Suited up and kitted out in all the appropriate attire, the first destination was the world famous Tangalooma Wrecks. Snorkelling the wrecks we were able to explore the reef ecosystem, learn about the species of fish and other underwater creatures present here from our tour guides and learn about the heritage and history of the wrecks and the role they play in creating a sheltered bay off the Moreton coastline. Not to mention the geological processes that take place and are eliminated or amplified by the reef system.
The first night of the trip, the class was given the privilege of having one of the resorts “Eco-rangers” talk about the marine and coastal environments and how natural and human induced stresses are manipulating our natural environment for better or worse.
As the night went on both students and staff were able to participate in the Wild Dolphin Feeding Program that the Tangalooma Resort is renowned for. The windy and cool conditions didn’t dampen the excitement of students at the prospect of simply feeding a wild dolphin. Each of the dolphins is recognised and named and the instructors were able to indicate during the feeding which dolphin you had fed. Prior to this, we participated in an educational presentation regarding the ethical and environmental effects that the program has and has had in the past.
On Day 2 we all woke bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to travel to the Southern End of the Island thanks to a full day tour on a 4WD Bus with our tour guide, Wade. Wade was a bank of knowledge covering many KLA’s and sneaking in the odd dad joke. The Southern Safari took us to the Normandy and Fairlight Wrecks (the only shipwrecks that were not sunk on purpose) , the Big Sandhills, the township of Kooringal, the Mirapool Lagoon, World War Two Bunkers and Middle Road. With our current topic being “ecosystems at risk”, we were able to very closely evaluate how the accretion cycle and longshore drift affect the shape of the island, what life is able to thrive and all of the processes surrounding. We also stopped and explored along the way, sandboarding the sand dunes and swimming in the Mirapools.
After a small break (just enough time for a game of football) the class found themselves back in the eco-centre with another eco-ranger for a session on the geomorphology of Moreton Island (how it was formed). We learned about the volcanic eruption that caused four of the world's largest sand islands and the Glasshouse Mountains, followed by the way sand is transported through the accretion cycle and aeolian transport from south of Sydney to South East Queensland. We then walked to the top of a dune with the goal to see the wedge shape of the island. Once the talk was over everyone was ready for bed as another big day followed.
With stomachs full from a buffet breaky, the third day began with us all eagerly jumping aboard the 4WD bus ready for another day of adventure. Our final day was another guided safari with Wade, this time though, exploring the Northern End of the Island. Stops included North Point, Champagne Pools, Cape Moreton, the Eastern Beach, the township of Cowan Cowan and once again Middle Road. Like the previous day we made stops along the way, exploring the rocks at the Champagne Pools, walking to the lighthouse at Cape Moreton and enjoying a swim.
Over the course of the three days, we learned many new things about coastal and reef ecosystems. Almost everything we learned will have a direct correlation to our upcoming exam, giving us the knowledge and the skills we need to greatly improve our ability to use real life examples as well as explain geographical and geological processes.
Highlights of the trips included the guided day tour as well as the snorkeling and not to forget the free time for games of footy and swimming, (waking up in a 5 star resort with crystal clear waters crusted in golden sand right out the door didn’t hurt either).
The trip was both educational and an enjoyable break from the rigor of the classroom. A huge thanks to Mr Seymour for driving the bus and joining in on the fun with us, to Mrs Fennamore for coming with us and helping us understand many of the syllabus dot points. Finally, a massive thank you to our amazing teacher, Mr Bailey for the hours of preparation and organisation that made our trip both successful and enjoyable for all.

Year 12 Retreat - Student Reflection
On Wednesday last week all of Year 12, plus many of our dear teachers and four amazing YMO’s, trekked up across the Queensland border to Bornhoffen PCYC, where we spent three days in the mountains building and strengthening our relationships with each other and God.
On the first night, we all dressed to the nines for our ‘loud shirt’ dinner, which presented a multitude of “Mr Irvin” impersonators. In the day, we were split into small groups with a mixture of people, many of whom we had little to do with before this time. In these groups we partook in challenges (go the sheep!), games and showed real vulnerability, showing sides of ourselves that we never would have dreamed of before. Through this, each of these groups became a tight knit team with bonds that, I’m sure, will last a long time.
We not only grew together as groups, but as an entire year group. We had the opportunity as a cohort to heal and grow stronger together. This was made possible by many of the special activities on retreat, including (but certainly not limited to) the Mass we participated in on Thursday night. Following an emotional day, we all came together to celebrate Mass in a ceremony that reflected the beautiful environment we were in. This Mass was made particularly special by the presence of Father Bing, who travelled to Bornhoffen in order to celebrate with us. It was a gorgeous and heartwarming experience for all of us, and left us all feeling connected to each other and to God. As we arrived back at school on Friday, I felt, despite the sudden wave of tiredness and craving for my own bed, that I had come back from retreat with a different group than I had left with. I had come back with a family.
On behalf of all Year 12, we would like to send a massive thank you to our YMO’S: Emerson, Bianca (who returned from her current role as YMO at Banora Point to join us), Natasha and Jacob, without whom the Retreat would not have been the special experience it was; all of our amazing staff leaders who joined us, and of course, the wonderful Mrs Reen.
